A little late, but...

Xanga needs to integrate photo's better.  Takes too long to publish them here, so I put the rest of the NYC trip pictures (with accompanying narratives) here: http://2635innyc.shutterfly.com

Still to come...scaling Mt. Whitney, and random thoughts from Jack handy

Day 2 - Goodbye, My Coney Island Baby

Shook off our hangover, met up with Mike, and scooted down to Coney Island for a rainy day of hot dogs, more beer, and boardwalk fun.  Ate Nathans Dogs and chilifries (sorry Top Dog is better), watched a naked guy get shot by paintball guns ("C'mon, 5 bucks, and you can shoot my guy in the firggin 'ead!"), road the swinging ferris wheel (oldest in America?) and the Cyclone.  Not your state of the art amusement park, but definitely a trhwoback style of charm that I apprecaited - a sense of nostalgia I gleaned from books and movies about life in the city back in the day.  Its a shame that they're tearing it down for condos.

Later we walked over to the brooklyn shoreline, walked around in a drizzle, brownbagging beer, listening to some music, and skipping stones.  not a bad way to spend the afternoon.

I really enjoyed walking around by these rundwon factories, and crumbling tenements.  Apparentlty theres a big starving artisit community that squats in these buildings, using them as bases for their creativity.  Like coney island, this area is targeted for redevelopment.  Kind of a shame no?  Despite appearances, these places are homes to some, and memories for ltosa others.

End o the day, we went in to Union Square to meet up with Sehkar for dinner at a crappy italian restuarant.  I bought three sets of chocolate for folks at home at Max Brennan's, but most of them (meaning all) accidentally crawled into my mouth and I ate them.  Accidentally.

:)

Khanh had work the next day, so she couldnt go out, but Kha and I met up with Andre and his freinds at the Black Betty in Brooklyn, and were later joined by Mike, Sehkar, and Niraj.  There was lotsa samba-ing and salsa-ing, and a  girl with a HUGE butt who was a great dancer.  I would put up pcitures from this night, but we were all WAAAAAYYYYY too drunk.  and i could not operate my camera.

I think we all ended up at our hotel in Manhattan, but then went BACK to brooklyn round 6 in the morning.

Not sure...twas all kinda hazy, and awesome.

Day 3:  2635 goes to Central park and the Guggenheim, and hangs out with Allyson and Andre at their pad.

Day 1 - Brooklyn...or..."happiness is a watermelon"

Khanh and Kha at her place in Park Heights - Khanh is getting a second degree in Chemistry while doing an art conservation internship at the MET and Brooklyn Art Museum

Khanh's awesomely affectionate and HYPOALLERGENIC (*whew* cuz i forgot my inhaler at home) cat Jack, whos a Hemingway and has SIX toes!

Started out my tour of Brooklyn by going to the Farmers market at Grand Army Plaza.

Then off to prospect park, and coming out the other side and exploring park slope...which is a REALLY cool neighborhood.  I really like the brownstown houses with the steps and porches where people just hang out on hot days.  There were street faires, and music, and lotsa cool bars and cafes.  I also told Kha (who suffers, like his sister, from the Tran family AZNGLOW syndrome) about the effects of Pepcid AC as part of ones pre-game regimen.  Needless to say, he was overjoyed that he was able to enjoy his beer and margaritas in park slope without truning his usual shade of red.

We also went looknig for a plant for khanh's room.  I got distracted by a korean market next to the hardware store they were in - as it was a very hot and sticky day, my attention was caught by the glistening perfection of a watermelon sitting on ice in the window.  Got a lotta looks walkin down the street with my face buried in it.  Turned into a sticky, fruit-sugary mess, but boy was it worth it.  If you have eaten an ice cold watermelon on a hot summer day, you just havent LIVED!!!!!!

This made me laugh.

We came back through the park to soak up some culture at the BAM.  They have this thnig caclled first Staurdays where they serve wine and snacks and the galleries are free!  They also had bluegrass music playing, and we got to see the Brooklyn Philharmonic.  I was sad we couldnt stay till the end of their set, because for their finale, their set included Queen, and Led Zep, among others.

We then  left for the promenade along the brooklyn brigge, and scoped out the cityscape, and I saw Lady Liberty for my first time ever!

We decided to go eat and headed out to Williamsburg, where we ate a this so-so Thai palce (more glitz and glam than substance).   We liquored up at a pub accrsoss the street while we waited, and checked out a record store.  Then we went to Bedford which really reminded me of Telegraph.  Definitely more my kind of palces there.  Went to Barcade, which was a sausage-fest, and then Union pool, where we met Bob and Suzy, who own Luna lounge.  They regaled me with tales of club-rinning and musicians come and gone, and were completely awesome to ha ng out with.  Also, I learned that everythnig in new York closes at four, and that lotsa new yokers wear funny clothes.  Also, Suzy looks like Kate Hudson from almost Famous all growed-up!

Stumbled home and got to bed round 4 ish...woke up to the cat sleeping on my chest the next morning.

Jack is bringing sexyback.

The next day....Mike comes to town...Coney Island...shoot the freak...and MORE!!!!
